Slider Windows

One of the most unique items on the Chevelle two-door wagons is the rear side slider windows. Much like the 1955-1957 Chevy Nomads, the side windows in the rear passenger area slide rearward to provide ventilation. To be honest, the design is rather poor and this poor design along with equally poorly designed water drainage (click here for the drain tube rebuild) for this part of the car explains why the floor pans on these cars are typically rusted out even on cars from warm dry climates.

The weatherstrips for the slider windows are unfortunately unique to these particular cars and as such are not reproduced. However, as another restorer of these unique cars has found, suitable weatherstripping can be made using rather generic weatherstripping available through JC Whitney. Here is a a few photos of samples of the flat chrome edge weather strip and the u-channel weatherstrip which I used and this shows how I added relief cuts to the flat edge strips so they could be formed around curves. When making the actual pieces I used, I bent the flat edge strips around a large round pole to make the curve very smooth and without kinks.

Using these parts I have manufactured not only the u-channels within which the windows slide, but the also the seal that runs vertically along the inside of the small divider pillar which separates the slider from the rear most fixed glass. While I was hesitant to begin this job, I am quite pleased with the results of the numerous weekends' worth of work it took to complete the task.

You may note that the window latches on the sliders are not technically correct pieces for the Chevelle wagons. The originals are shaped somewhat different and held to the glass with small bolts through a hole in the glass. The latches I got with the car were junk and since they are not reproduced, I used the next best thing: reproduction 55-57 Chevy Nomad window latches. They look a little different than the Chevelle versions, but they are functionally the same and actually work well and look pretty good once they are installed.
